Wasabi smoke alarm raises a stink in Japan | Crave – CNET

Japanese companies Air Water Safety Service and Seems, “a bioventure in Tokyo”, have teamed up to create a stinky fire alarm for the deaf and hearing impaired.

Controlled tests involving deaf, hard-of-hearing, and normal hearing proved effective as the alarm woke sleeping test subjects all within two minutes after the alarm is tripped.

The alarm can work optimally in a 50 square foot room, filling it with the aroma of mustard, wasabi and horseradish with a chemical compound allyl isothiocyanate.

Currently the alarm goes for $500 but is currently under improvements to bring the price down.  The stink alarm is also being marketed to clubs and karaoke bars where an alarm may be drowned out.  So now “idol” wannabes on the mic isn’t the only one stinking up the place.
